Fresh Grade is a tool that I have been using to communicate student learning. I am using this tool in the classroom because I would like for my students to be able to focus on their learning goals and place less emphasis on letter grades. Ultimately, a letter grade is a rough indication of where a student may fall on a grade scale. When teachers write report cards, we reflect on the assessment collected and make a decision on the letter grade which would be best suitable for a student. What the letter grades fail to do are to describe how that student got to that point.
Fresh Grade is an assessment tool which allows teachers and students to upload content (pictures, videos, audio, notes, etc) to a student portfolio. Students are able to set goals and work towards achieving them at their own pace. With more descriptive feedback and communication between the teacher and student, students achieve the required skill or concept more easily. What is even better is that this communication can be passed on to parents as well.
